Using air services for your logistics operations is often suitable for small and more time sensitive types of cargo, where the cost effectiveness is less of a priority.
MTF Logistics team of freight forwarding specialists have access to many Melbourne based import and exporting options, including those offered by Victoria’s main air freight hub, Melbourne Airport.
Melbourne Airport, boasting a 24/7, curfew free operation, handles more than 30 per cent of Australia’s international air freight with cargo terminal operators including Qantas, Menzies, Dnata, DHL, and the Australia Post Gateway facility.
Our International Airfreight services include:
If your business requires importing or exporting of heavy or bulk cargo, liquids or perishable items that are not time sensitive, then sea freight may be the ideal solution, with benefits including reliability and economical service offerings.
For Victorian based businesses, The Port of Melbourne will be primary a container port to utilise, with Swanson Dock being one of the leading international container terminals in Australasia, handling around 36% of Australia’s container trade and also the largest automotive import terminal which handles up to 1000 new motor vehicles per day.
With multipurpose terminals handling a variety of non-containerised cargo including farm equipment and machinery, and breakbulk commodities like timber, paper, iron and steel.
MTF Logistics offer the following sea freight solutions:

The Port of Melbourne handles more than a third of Australia’s container trade. It moved 3.39 million TEU in the 2025 financial year and 3.5 million in calendar 2025 — a second consecutive record.
Three international container terminals operate there, and unlike Sydney they sit in two separate precincts. Patrick runs Swanson Dock East. DP World runs Swanson Dock West. Victoria International Container Terminal, a subsidiary of ICTSI, runs Webb Dock East, which is the newest of the three and heavily automated — an automated stacking yard taking vessels up to 347 metres and roughly 12,000 TEU. VICT extended its Webb Dock contract to 2066 in February 2026.
The Swanson and Webb Dock split matters practically. They are different parts of the port with different road access, so which terminal your container is on changes the transport cost and the turnaround.
Victoria runs a Voluntary Pricing Protocol requiring stevedores to give the Department of Transport and Planning 60 days’ notice before changing landside prices, with changes taking effect on 1 January each year. It makes Melbourne’s charges more predictable than some ports, though no cheaper.
Patrick’s landside charge at East Swanson Dock is $242.00 per full import container from 1 January 2026, up from $224.05, plus $50.45 for an electronic vehicle booking slot. DP World Melbourne and VICT publish their own terminal access and landside charges effective the same date.
The Port Rail Transformation Project has built a new Coode Road rail terminal interfacing directly with Swanson Dock East, with two sidings each handling 600-metre trains. The arithmetic is stark: a 600-metre train carries 84 TEU, against roughly 3 TEU on a B-double.
The broader Port Rail Shuttle Network, a $58 million state programme, connects the port to metropolitan freight hubs, with existing intermodal terminals at Laverton and Spotswood and further terminals planned at Somerton, Altona and Dandenong South. If your warehouse is near one of those, it is worth asking about.
The Port of Melbourne is a biosecurity first point of entry for freight containers, general goods, inorganic bulk goods and waste. Australia’s Post Entry Quarantine facility at Mickleham, north of Melbourne, handles high-risk live imports — cats, dogs, horses, birds, hatching eggs, bees and ruminants — which makes Melbourne the practical entry point for those.
Melbourne Airport handles more than 30% of Australia’s international air freight and has six cargo terminal operators on site: Qantas, Menzies, Dnata, Swissport, DHL and the Australia Post Gateway. It has a purpose-built freighter apron and more than 35 freighter services a month, which means dedicated freighter capacity rather than passenger belly space alone. In the first quarter of 2024 it handled 40.2% of the national air freight export volume.
Shanghai to Melbourne is 17 days on Maersk’s Qilin service and 21 on Dragon. Yantian to Melbourne is around 18 days and Ningbo to Melbourne around 22 on the revised Dragon proforma. Note that on the Dragon rotation Melbourne is called after Sydney, which adds roughly four days against a Sydney arrival on the same vessel — relevant if you have the option of either port.
MTF are very responsive, well priced & a pleasure to deal with. They really are on the customer’s side. I’ve successfully imported all kinds of building materials with them over the last year or so, they always take the stress out of import paperwork & keep my products moving through the system as fast as possible.

These Guys are great which is rare in the freight business, excellent customer service they go above and beyond to deliver.
We engaged MTF Melbourne to handle our imports and redeliveries after our existing provider deemed our specialised goods too difficult for them to handle. MTF have been nothing short of fantastic to deal with, from the admin & sales staff, through to the logistics team, everybody is a pleasure to deal with, friendly and efficient, and make the entire process a breeze, all at reasonable rates.
