With a high attention to detail at every stage of cargo transit including pickup, documentation, customs clearance and delivery or pickup, this ensures an efficient and cost effective service delivery and reduces delays that can be costly to your business.

MTF Logistics Sydney based freight forwarding services operate both sea and air cargo services.

Our highly knowledgeable team can assist in recommending a cargo method which is the best fit for your cargo type, budget and delivery time frame.

Sydney Air Freight

Sydney International Airport is a significant freight hub for Australia, accounting for approximately 45% of all freight imports and exports. With seven dedicated cargo terminals controlled by five operators, MTF Logistics has access to many air cargo import and export options to suit your requirements.

Moving your cargo via air services may be beneficial for smaller, more time sensitive cargo where cost effectiveness is less of a priority.

Sydney Sea Freight

Port Botany is Sydney’s deepwater seaport located in Botany Bay. With close proximity to both the CBD, along with other key transport infrastructure such as the domestic airport and rail terminal.

Sea freight is perfect for heavy or bulk items, liquids or perishable items and is an economical and reliable freight option, however it is not suitable for time sensitive freight requirements.

Whether you require importing to, or exporting from Sydney, MTF Logistics sea freight service gives your business reliable freight access to many Asia Pacific locations, and extends your supply chain reach to locations in USA, Canada, Europe and South America.

Road, Rail & More

Once your valuable cargo has arrived via air or sea in Sydney and receives appropriate import clearance, MTF Logistics can suggest local methods such as rail or road to complete your cargos journey from abroad to your business or end location.

Working Port Botany

Port Botany handles 99.6% of New South Wales’s container volume and moved 2,805,000 TEU in the 2025 financial year. For an importer that scale is mostly invisible — until something needs to be sorted out, and then knowing how the port actually works starts to matter.

There are three container terminals, each run by a different stevedore. DP World operates the southern side of Brotherson Dock at berths 10, 11 and 12. Patrick operates the northern side at berths 6 to 9. Hutchison Ports Sydney operates Hayes Dock at berths 1 and 2. Which terminal your container lands at is decided by the shipping line, not by you, and it changes what happens next — the booking system, the free time, the charges and the transport arrangements all differ between them.

What the charges actually are

The cost that surprises first-time importers is not the freight. It is the landside charge the stevedore applies to every full container leaving the terminal, which your transport operator passes on to you.

At Patrick’s Port Botany terminal that charge is $224.90 per full import container from 1 January 2026, up from $208.20. There is also a vehicle booking fee of $50.45 per container for an electronic slot. DP World and Hutchison apply their own equivalents. None of this appears on a freight quote unless somebody puts it there, which is why an all-in landed cost is worth asking for rather than a port-to-port rate.

Landside performance at Botany is regulated under the Port Botany Landside Improvement Strategy, which sets standards for truck turnaround. It is the reason slot management at Botany is tighter than at most Australian ports.

Rail out of the port

Port Botany is the only Australian port with dedicated on-dock rail at all three container terminals. It connects by dedicated freight line to intermodal terminals at Enfield, Moorebank and Cooks River. For importers moving volume, or anyone with a warehouse near one of those terminals, rail is often cheaper than road and less exposed to slot availability. More than 86% of regional NSW container exports already move to the port by rail.

Quarantine and air freight

Port Botany is a biosecurity first point of entry for freight containers, general goods, inorganic bulk goods and waste, so containers can be inspected on arrival rather than moved elsewhere.

Sydney Airport handles 48% of all Australian international air freight — 76% more than any other Australian airport — and around 80% of it travels in the holds of passenger aircraft rather than on dedicated freighters. That is worth knowing when passenger schedules change, because air freight capacity into Sydney moves with them.

Transit times you can plan around

Maersk’s Qilin service runs Shanghai to Sydney in 14 days. On the Dragon service the same leg is 18 days, with Yantian to Sydney around 13 days and Ningbo to Sydney around 18. Via Singapore on the Greater Australia Connect string, Sydney is roughly 19 days from Singapore.

Those are port-to-port figures on published proformas. LCL takes longer, because the container has to be deconsolidated at destination before your goods are available. We will give you the real number for your route rather than a range.
